I just submitted our tallies to the ARRl today. and sent the following
message and you may feel free to reprint it....
THE FOLLOWING WAS SENT TO THE ARRL WITH OUR FIELD DAY REPORT:

FIELD DAY/JOHNSTON COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY
JUNE 28-29, 1997
LOCATION: FOUR OAKS, NORTH CAROLINA

WE OPERATED 5A IN HOPES WE WOULD HAVE A LOT OF OPERATORS. WE DID
NOT.......
WE OPERATED QRP (5 WATTS OR LESS) AND USED ALL BATTERY POWER THIS YEAR.
WE MADE ALL OUR ANTENNAS THAT WE USED FROM WIRE AND WOOD. WE ALSO USED
LADDERS AND TREES TO HOLD UP THE WIRE ANTENNAS FOR HF. THE TWO METER
POSITION WAS MANNED BY ONE HAM FOR THE WHOLE PERIOD AND HE MADE HIS 2 METER
(5 EL) QUAD FROM SCRATCH AND HEARD A LOT BUT COULD NOT GET THROUGH TO ALL
OF THEM ON 5 WATTS.
WE USED A SOLAR PANEL TO OPERATE THE HF CW POSITION WHEN IT WAS MANNED.
WE ONLY HAD 6 OTHER OPERATORS AND THEY TOOK TURNS COOKING, GO FERRING, AND
PUTTING UP THE ANTENNAS AS THEY FELL. WE HAD STRONG WINDS, BUT NO STORMS
THIS YEAR. WE DID A LOT OF COOKING AND SITTING AROUND TALKING.
THIS EVENT IS A YEARLY GET TOGETHER FOR A LOT OF US AND MANY DID NOT
SHOW
THIS YEAR. THERE WERE ONLY 7 OPERATORS AND ABOUT 15 MORE WHO HELPED SET UP
AND PUT UP ANTENNAS.
WE DID HAVE A HOT SPELL TO DO THE FIELD DAY IN AND A LOT COULD NOT COME
OUT BECAUSE OF POOR HEALTH.
WE HAD MORE FELLOWSHIP, CAMARADERIE AND JUST PLAIN FUN THIS YEAR. WE
ALREADY HAD OUR EXPERIENCES WITH EMERGENCIES LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR WITH
THE TWO HURRICANES THAT DEVASTATED OUR AREA (BERTHA AND FRAN) AND WE STILL
HAVE NOT RECOVERED FULLY FROM THOSE LAST YEAR. A LOT OF OUR HAMS LOST A
LOT OF THEIR EQUIPMENT IN THOSE STORMS.
WE FOUND THAT WE WORKED A LOT LESS STATIONS, CALLED ON THE RADIO MORE,
AND
GOT FEWER TO ANSWER US, AS WE WERE QRP.
WE STILL HAD A LOT OF FUN AND ENJOYED IT TOTALLY.

J.P. KEON/AB4PP FIELD DAY COORDINATOR

OUR TALLY WAS AS FOLLOWS:
WE MADE 76 CW CONTACTS
       105 SSB CONTACTS
         22 SIMPLEX ON 2 METERS
ALL WERE DONE WITH 5 WATTS OR LESS AND ON WIRE AND HOMEBREW ANTENNAS. WE
USED BATTERY POWER ONLY AND IT WAS ASSISTED BY SOLAR POWER. THERE WERE 7
WHO OPERATED THE RADIOS AND ABOUT 15 WHO PUT IN A LOT OF HARD WORK TO GET
THE FOOD AND THE ANTENNAS READY FOR OPERATION. PUT UP AND TAKE DOWN WAS A
LOT MORE SIMPLE THAN USUAL.
FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS WERE BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. MY HAT IS OFF TO THE
COOKS AND THE PROVIDERS OF THE REFRESHMENTS....
WE HAD A LOT LESS HELP THIS YEAR AND A LOT LESS OPERATION OF THE
RADIOS.....
WE TOTALED 1285 POINTS THIS YEAR AND THAT WAS WITH THE QRP STATUS, AND
WE
WILL TRY TO QUALIFY FOR 1000 EXTRA POINTS FOR THE OTHER THINGS WE DID.....
70 TO THE 3RD, DE JP/ab4pp
